Knights achieve National League Division 2 Status

Northamptonshire is finally back on the map in the world of American Football, with Northants Knights finishing their associate season with an impressive five wins and only one loss.

Jack O'Beirne, Knights Club Chairman, said: "It’s been a long and tough campaign with a few setbacks along the way.

"We developed a strong coaching staff most of which played for the Northants Storm back in the late 90s and who have a passion and desire to make the Knights a success.

"We have also been fortunate enough to have developed a strong committee who have the passion and drive to move the club forward."

The Knights' campaign kicked off with a victory over the Etone Jaguars, while the only loss came away to the Hereford Stampede.

Speaking with former Head Coach of the Knights, Matt Godfrey, reflecting on the season, he said: "All in all, it was a great start to an amazing club.

“I wanted the perfect season - I want these guys to know what it feels like to win every game.

"The loss left a distinct sour taste in my mouth. Not only did the players have a bad day, we as coaches didn’t get the right formula to win that game.

"What impresses me with this team, though, is the drive and determination of the players to win. Which is why we returned the favour to Hereford when they visited us with a convincing victory.

"Whilst I have handed the reins over to Wayne Gumbs, who is now Head Coach, I will move to develop a youth team for the Knights.

"I will always be proud of what we achieved. In two years we went from 10 guys on the Racecourse to a roster of over 50 players and entry into Division 2.

"Everyone on the Knights roster and staff should be proud of what we achieved in such a short time, and I am excited to see what the future holds for our club.”

With such a strong performance, the Knights have already grabbed the attention of well established clubs in the UK and will be considered serious contenders in Division 2.
