Match report: Northants Knights 26-20 Hereford Stampede

Northants Knights continued our undefeated start to the season with a hard-fought 26-20 victory over Hereford Stampede, taking us to 3-0 on the year.

The game got off to a slow start with neither side able to move the ball early, and Hereford took the lead after a bad snap gave them great starting position. Hereford capitalised on this with a nice throw to make it 0-6.

The Knights struggled to move the ball on the ground, but QB Nick Rizzuto connected with Tyler Gordon to equal the score at 6-6.

Hereford’s momentum was then halted by a nice INT by debutant Nick Jones, with the Knights then marching down to the other end for a TD ran in by RB Hulston, continuing his solid debut season. The 2PT was good, making it 14-6.

The Knights then took charge of the game with Rae Hamilton-Liburd picking off Hereford on a deep throw, returning the ball 65 yards for the score.

Hereford hit back with a long drive ending in a score, making the score 20-12 at the half.

Some choice words from the coaching staff seemed to help the boys and they flew out of the blocks for the second half, with the opening drive resulting in a touchdown, following some great work from Gordon breaking multiple tackles to punch it in.

After this, both teams defenses stiffened up, with no changes to the score until Hereford finally made a breakthrough after the two-minute warning in the fourth quarter.

It was too little too late though, as the Knights were able to run the clock and finally take the knee, ending the game 26-20 and moving the Knights to 3-0-0.
