Match report: Knights Juniors get 2022 off to perfect start

QB Luke Brotherton

Northants Knights Juniors got 2022 off to the perfect start by beating Black Country Vipers 46-4 in the opening gameday of the U19 D2 Midlands.

The U19's were due to face Leicester Falcons as well as the Vipers, but the Falcons had to withdraw from the tournament, meaning a 1-0 walk over victory for the Knights.

Knights started the game hot and Vipers had no answer for the power run game of rookie Oli Thomas and quarterback Luke Brotherton, who combined for 177 rushing yards, three touchdowns and two extra points.

On defense it was defensive MVP Will Heath who stole the show racking up a total 4.5 tackles, a sack, a forced fumble and even returned an interception to the house.

Speaking after the game, Head Coach Jack O'Beirne said: "First off, we want to thank Black Country for travelling down and giving us a real game - the scoreline does not do them justice. For us today this was just another step in the process.

"It was great to see Luke transition to quarterback and for the rookies to step in and get game time. I am excited to see how far this bunch of players can take it."

The Juniors remained focus on the task at hand despite the late withdrawal of the Falcons, starting the season with 2-0-0.
